The new Escape compact crossover is Ford’s latest vehicle to shed a boxy façade for more finessed contours, a change that executives say improves fuel economy.

When Ford first launched the Escape a decade ago, designers sought to make it look rugged, like an SUV, rather than streamlined like Honda’s CR-V or Toyota’s RAV4. But shoppers are now looking for sleeker design, said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of the Americas.
“We’re injecting a style aspect to it, which consumers are saying, ‘We want, (but) don’t pull back one iota in the utility capability,’ ” Fields said.
Ford unveils the Escape today at the Los Angeles auto show, ahead of its sales launch next year. Ford is counting on the Escape’s huge customer base to make the new version as successful as its predecessor, even though Ford showrooms will soon be crowded with five car-based family vehicles.
The Escape has been Ford’s second- or third-best-selling vehicle for four years. The new Escape contains several new features aimed at family drivers: Regarding the outgoing model, customers complained when they had to remove the rear headrests to fold seats. But on the new Escape, headrests fold with the seat back. With one optional feature, a driver with her arms full of packages and the key fob in her pocket need only swing her leg under the rear bumper and the rear gate opens automatically. An upgraded MyFord Touch infotainment system is optional.
Rather than considering a hybrid, like the outgoing Escape had, new Escape buyers can choose between 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter EcoBoost engines, or a carryover 2.5-liter four-cylinder. Ford expects more than 80% of Escape buyers to choose an EcoBoost. The new Escape is expected to get up to 33 m.p.g. on the highway, up from 28 m.p.g. in the 2011 model.

The Texas Auto Writers Association has awarded the 2012 Ford F-150 a slew of honors. The pickup took home the Truck of Texas title by beating out its competitors at the annual Truck Rodeo. The award is the association’s most prestigious honor, but Ford also picked up a few other nods. TAWA named the company’s EcoBoost engine technology its best vehicle feature, and the 2012 Ford Edge took home the CUV of Texas badge. Finally, the entire Ford pickup line was named the Truck Line of Texas by the association, making for a pretty clean sweep of the truck competition.
This year, manufacturers entered 48 vehicles into the TAWA Truck Rodeo, and 57 automotive writers turned out to evaluate the trucks and SUVs. When the dust settled, Ford had earned seven awards total, including the best heavy-duty, luxury and full-size pickup trucks.
For its part, Chrysler saw its products fare well in the competition, too. The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee went home carrying SUV of Texas trophy, while TAWA awarded its sister, the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, the mid-sized SUV of Texas title. Finally, the writers in attendance named the 2012 Dodge Durango the full-size SUV of Texas.

Ford to celebrate 110 years of racing heritage at SEMA. On this day in 1901, Henry Ford took his home-built race car named “Sweepstakes” and entered a 10-mile race at the Detroit Driving Club against the favored Alexander Winton. Ford ended up winning the race and the victory garnered attention from investors that would help launch the Ford Motor Company just a couple of years later. Ranger to Sell Around World.

Ford may be ending production of its venerable Ranger pickup in the U.S., but the compact truck is becoming a growing part of the automaker’s global strategy.
The new Ranger will be built in South Africa and shipped to 148 countries.
“You know how important trucks are to Ford throughout the world,” said Joe Hinrichs, head of Ford in Asia and Africa.
Hinrichs was in Johannesburg last week for the start of the motor show in South Africa’s largest city, where an all-new Ranger is being featured. The truck will arrive at showrooms in South Africa by the end of November.
Ford began production in July of a diesel engine in South Africa for the Ranger, part of a $500-million investment.

While the Ford Focus ST is a goer for production, the American giant teased hot hatch fans further in Frankfurt by unveiling an ST version of the Fiesta compact – as a concept. Another chapter in Ford’s new global performance strategy, the Fiesta ST is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine – like the Focus St’s 2.0-litre with twin independent variable camshaft timing. Maximum power is 132kW and peak torque is 240Nm –delivering zero to 100km/h in under 7 seconds.
Styling enhancements mirror the Ford Focus ST – the Fiesta version running a large front grille and large rear diffuser with twin exhausts. There’s also a sports body kit styled like Ford’s Fiesta World Rally Championship cars and flared wheel arches to accommodate the 17-inch alloy wheels.
Underneath the Ford Fiesta ST features stiffer sports tuned suspension.
The Ford Fiesta ST shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show was painted in Molten Orange, borrowed from Ford North America’s superb SVT F-150 Raptor pickup.
Although shown as a concept, there’s little doubt the Ford Fiesta ST is headed into production and Car Showroom would like to be at the head of the line to buy this pocket rocket.
